BioGas Matrix Analysis

GC | GC-MAS

SanAir’s Sustainable Air Quality team facilitates renewable energy project operation and compliance through biogas matrix analysis testing. Our work includes analyzing landfill gas (LFG) emissions associated with waste-to-energy production.

Organosilicons cause most of the damage to microturbines, boilers, and IC generation systems. We measure the organosilicon content, major gas components (methane, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide & carbon dioxide), the complete volatile organic compounds (VOC) spectrum, plus organic and inorganic sulfur of your biogas. From this analysis, our biogas molecular scientists can determine the fouling potential (from silica formation) and the treatability of biogas. We also counsel clients on their sampling issues, helping to outline the most effective strategy for their biogas needs.

Health Impacts

Landfills and wastewater treatment plants produce hydrogen sulfide, methane, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, among other compounds, that may create health impacts for people in close proximity. Odors present the most common cause of nausea or ill-health, though the possibility of more serious impacts from the release of VOCs does exist.

Analytical Services

SanAir works with clients that include landfills and wastewater treatment facilities to develop a complete gas profile and identify the appropriate treatment processes needed to meet even the most stringent biogas specifications. These treatment methods can include:

  • Siloxane (and other organosilicons) Removal
  • Moisture Removal
  • Sulfur Removal
  • Methane Content Upgrade
  • System Maintenance

Our laboratory can accommodate sampling using Tedlar bags, which allow technicians to observe the sampling process, as well as canister sampling technology.
